Design & Build: Vegetable Garden, Hampshire 2005

The brief

The client wanted to turn a very long vegetable patch which required hours of weeding and care into a low-maintenance, highly productive vegetable garden.

Action

It was decided that narrow, raised beds surrounded by shingle paths would be the most efficient use of the space. The whole area was measured out and divided into various sized beds which would fulfil the requirements for different vegetables.  Large raised beds were created at each end; one for the existing established asparagus bed and the other for onions, leeks and other vegetables that require space. A path dug out alongside provided the soil for the next raised bed and so on. The remaining beds were to be used for artichokes, salad, potatoes, peas, beans etc.
